Faith over Fear



Recently I was reminded of this beautiful passage from John O'Donohue's poem, 'A Morning Offering' and it's had me considering my own fears and how I can move beyond them to live a more fruitful life. So this month I decided to look at fear and how we can work towards turning our fear into excitement and action.

What abundance could you invite into your life if you were to step away from fear?


What is fear?

Fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived danger. Obviously in a moment of real danger this is a vital emotion which can be life saving, but often fear can stop us from doing something or making a change that would really benefit us.

Our brains are wired to protect us from harm, so when we embark on change or starting something new it tells us we might be putting ourselves at risk.


Storytelling

As human beings we are really good at telling stories, especially to ourselves! Consider this, are you afraid of the act eg. public speaking, or are you afraid of the outcome? Are you telling yourself you can't speak publicly because you're afraid of speaking, or it is because you're afraid of other people's reaction to your words? Is the fear real or have you fueled it by making up a story about it?


Fear Vs Excitement

Did you know that fear and excitement show up in our bodies in the same way? You can work towards changing your mindset to engage with the physical sensations as excitement rather fear, turning that fear into positive action.


Try this...

Think of a situation you feel fearful of that might be holding you back and ask yourself the following questions.

  1. What is it that I am really afraid of here?

  2. How is that fear holding me back from what I really want?

  3. If I released the fear and had faith, what would that give me the freedom to do?

  4. What am I excited for?

  5. What small steps can I take today to help me overcome my fear?
